When we are talking about hairsprays, they all function for the same thing, for sure. In the end, we use a hairspray in order to ‘glue’ the hair, holding the hair in a specific style. Different products may have varying formulas; yet, we usually classify hairsprays into aerosol and non-aerosol.
Many of us often wonder whether the aerosol or non-aerosol hairspray is better. Actually, what are the differences between aerosol and non-aerosol hairsprays? Is it true that one of them is bad for the environment? Continue reading below!
Actually, the terms aerosol and non-aerosol refer to how the hairspray deliver its content. An aerosol hairspray is a suspension of tiny particles (which can be solid or liquid) in a gas, contained under a relatively high pressure level in the packaging. As the effect, whenever you press the release valve, the product will immediately and continuously emit the mist of the hairspray. Some time ago, aerosol hairsprays were said to be bad to the ozone layer of our atmosphere because they use CFC, Chlorine, and Bromine. However, the newer products today don’t use CFC anymore, making these products safe.
On the contrary, a non-aerosol hairspray usually comes in a form of liquid. The packaging has a pump, which will mix the liquid with some air and emit the liquid as small droplets. However, due to the pumping mechanism, the product may not immediately emit the spray on the initial press, and also it can’t produce the spray continuously.
Aerosol vs Non Aerosol Hairspray
|Aerosol Hairspray||Non-Aerosol Hairspray|
|- Comes in a form of suspension of tiny particles (solid or liquid) in a gas||- Usually comes in a form of liquid|
|- Immediately and continuously releases the spray||- Emits the spray in short bursts|
|- Tends to produce a finer mist||- Tends to produce bigger droplets|
|- Suitable for hair styles and finishes that are soft and with high volume||- Suitable for styles that are very structured, sleek, and defines, such as for smoothing stray hair in a braided style|

So, despite the similar function, aerosol hairsprays can spray continuously and deliver a finer mist suitable for soft and high-volume hair. On the other hand, non-aerosol hairsprays shoot short bursts, produce bigger droplets that are suitable for structured, sleek, and define hairstyles.
